The Library has an APA (American Psychological Association) style citation guide.
Have questions about in-text citations or how to cite that government report or image you found? This guide goes over how to cite all different source types, provide sample papers and reference lists, and so much more!
Citing Videos:
The first example should be used if you have a physical copy (for example, a film on DVD) and the second example should be used if you accessed the video online:
Producer, E. T. (Producer), & Director, E. O. (Director). (Year). Title of video. Country of Origin: Studio.
Producer, E. T. (Producer), & Director, E. O. (Director). (Year). Title of streaming video. Retrieved from __________________
Here's an example of a citation for a streaming video from one of the library's databases:
Deutsche Welle (Producer). (2000). Mastering fashion design: Studying with Vivienne Westwood [Streaming video]. Retrieved from https://fod.infobase.com
NOTE: Missing information (director, producer, etc.) can be omitted.
Citing Newspaper Articles
To cite a newspaper article, you need an in-text citation (within the text of a source) and a corresponding reference (usually provided at the end of the source or within the footnotes).
Author last name, Initials. (Year Month Day). Article Title. Title of Newspaper, Page number(s).
EXAMPLE:
- Schultz, S. (2005, December 28). Calls made to strengthen state energy policies. The Country Today, 1A, 2A.
If the article is found online, please add the URL at the end of the citation instead of the page numbers.
Citing Websites
When all information for a web page or web document is present, the basic format is:
Last name, F. M. (Year, Month Date). Title of page. Site name. URL
Missing Information:
- If the resource was written by a group or organization, use the name of the group/organization as the author. Additionally, if the author and site name are the same, omit the site name from the citation.
- If the page's author is not listed, start with the title instead.
- If the date of publication is not listed, omit.
The standard form for article from an online journal or magazine is:
Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article.Title of Online Periodical, volume number(issue
number if available). Retrieved from http://www.someaddress.com/full/url/
- Bell, N. (1987). Congress considers global climate change.Bioscience,37(4), 258. Retrieved from https://go.openathens.net/redirector/umb.edu?url=http%3A%2F%2Fbioscience.oxfordjournals.org%2Fcontent%2F37%2F4%2F258
If the article has a DOI, use that in place of Retrieved from ...
Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (Date of publication). Title of article.Title of Online Periodical, volume number(issue
number if available). doi:0000000/000000000000 or http://dx.doi.org/10.0000/0000
- Filipe dos Santos, C. A., Leitão, A. E., Pais, I. P., Lidon, F. C., & Ramalho, J. C. (2015). Perspectives on thepotential impacts of climate changes on coffee plant and bean quality. Emirates Journal of Food & Agriculture (EJFA), 27(2),152-163. doi:10.9755/ejfa.v27i2.19468
