Each book in the library has a unique call number. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library.

Finding Books

First find the call number for the book in the UMBrella. Make sure the book is "Available" or "Not Charged".

The call number in the catalog is written left to right, for example QC981.8.G56 C42 1989. The books on the shelf have the call numbers written top to bottom

QC

981.8

.G56

C42

1989

Most books are located in the Healey Library's Main Stacks. The first letter(s) of the call number determine which floor the book is located.

Main Stacks, Call numbers beginning with:

  • A-NC     8th Floor
  • ND-Z     9th Floor

Once you are on the correct floor, look for signs at end of each shelf showing letter(s). Then look for the first set of numbers after the letter(s). Continue to follow each set of numbers and/or letters until you have located the book.

If you have problem finding the material you need, ask for help at the Circulation desk on the 2nd floor or the Reference desk on the 4th floor.
