When searching UMBrella for ebooks

  • Filter the results to include
    • Material Type - Books
    • Availability - Full Text Online (includes only online resources)
  • “Click on the link Online Access Available below the title of the ebook to access the title.
  • Alternatively, click on the title to see the item record. The full-text link is found towards the bottom of the page.

  •   The links to ebooks start with "Full Text Available at..."

  • You will be prompted to enter your campus username and password if you are off campus. You will not need to log in when you’re on-campus for most resources. Like with our previous authentication method, ezproxy, there are a few exceptions, like our ebooks on Ebook Central and Skillsoft.
  • If you are accessing an ebook from the EBSCO Ebook Collection, you may be prompted to log in with an EBSCO account. Log in with your credentials, or create a new EBSCO account.

From WorldCat at UMass Boston, select a search limit (i.e. Libraries Worldwide, Boston Library Consortium, or UMass Boston)

  • Enter your search terms in the search box
  • The ebooks on the results page will have eBook written below the title
  • Click on the title to access the record
  • Click on the link at the bottom of the page under the heading "Find a copy online"
  • You will be prompted to enter your last name and barcode if you are off campus
  • If the ebook is not carried by UMass Boston you can order the print copy through Interlibrary loan

  1. The guide says "You will be prompted to enter your campus username and password if you are off campus", implying that this is unnecessary on campus. But I am currently on campus and it still requires a username and password.

  2. Thank you for your comment! The library uses OpenAthens to authenticate users both on and off campus. This does not always happen, but sometimes, if there is a system hicupp, you may be prompted to authenticate with your UMass Boston credentials, but once you provide this, you will be able to access materials. It is also important to note that some ebooks are only available to UMass Boston community members (student/faculty/staff). If you need clarification on what materials you have access to, please contact us at library.reference@umb.edu.
